We noticed a crack starting right after the weather turned cold. Within a few days the whole panel had cracked from top to bottom. The dealership where I bought it says it's not covered under warranty and that it will cost $387 to fix. It's obviously a know issue as the service guy told me they are using "better materials" to fix it. It's BS if you ask me so I will be checking Ford's TSB and seeing if I can apply a little pressure to have it fixed for free. This is a factory defect.

It looks like I'm not alone with this stupid Ford defect (see pic). How many complaints does it take to get Ford to step up (like a real auto maker should) to fix it?! Because that's what they should do, FIX IT! AM I RIGHT, PEOPLE? FIX! IT!
I guess if the gate was falling off the back and killing people behind you it would be a big deal, but it's just a crack. Nothing to see here, just move along.

I like this vehicle, but the crack in the back really distracts from the looks. I have noticed several others while driving with the same problem. I can't believe Ford would let a problem like this go, with all the bad pub they had on the tires blowing. When you pay as much as these vehicles cost, the body shouldn't crack.

Unbelievable! I'm only sorry I didn't find this web site before I bought my Explorer. The cracked panel is the least of my car's problems, all of which have surfaced within the last 6 weeks. Last week, it was my brakes and rotors: replaced for $900. This week, it's my transmission...and most of you already know about that little bonus feature.

This is for all of the men who think that their wives cracked the body of the car below the rear window...not true! This is a problem that we were told by previous Ford 2004 Explorer owners....they were shocked to hear that it had not happened to our car yet...well..it finally did...I awoke just last week to an early morning frost that covered the car...after the car had warmed up I continued down the road to do my weekly grocery shopping only to find when I approached my vehicle to put my groceries in...the crack was there! I am so upset about this.....last American car we will ever purchase....should have known better..we love our Toyota Camry:)
It's great to have access to websites like this..but at the same time up setting to see that this is a problem that Ford needs to be responsible for...how do we get Ford to fix this problem....we were in the process of trading the car in for a newer model...not a chance!!!!

Ford will not fix and now every where I go I see the same model with a crack. My brother has an explorer same model year and his did it about 3 months after mine. I also have a neighbor who has the same problem. If you look around you will see the cracks everywhere on 2004 Explorers. A family friend worked on the Ford assembly line in STL MO and he said it was a problem on the line and Ford knew about it then but did nothing to fix it. Last Ford for me. I can't imagine with so many complaints why this is not a recall. I thought it was a scratch, but it got bigger and bigger. It now runs from the window to the edge of the panel that opens up. I worry about water/moisture getting inside and causing rust, but I do not want to pay the huge amount of money to replace it.
Even if I did, would it happen again?????

Just like many of the other I have read about here, a crack appeared on the rear tailgate panel directly below the tailgate glass and next to the Ford emblem. I contacted the car shop where I normally take my vehicles for any body problems. They told me this is a frequent problem and that there is nothing they can do about it, if you try to repair the crack, it will crack again on that same spot. They also told me Ford does not sell this panel, that you have to buy the whole tailgate window if you want to replace it. Everyone here know how much that is going to cost, not to mention the paint job afterwards to have it match your color. This panel is glued to the glass, and it seems that there seems to be no way of removing it without damaging the glass. In light of how many people have complaint about this problem, this seems to be a factory problem and Ford should do a recall on these panels to have them replaced/upgraded to one that will not crack. It is really annoying to keep your car looking like new and then have, through no fault of yours, a crack appear on your shiny nicely waxed panel. Stand behind your product Ford!

2004 Ford Explorer. A crack appeared on the rear tailgate panel directly below the tailgate glass and next to the Ford emblem. The dealer, Summerville Ford, Summerville, SC, informed me that although he sees this problem OFTEN on this Explorer body style, no recall has been issued and Ford would not pay for the repair. Obviously, Ford is aware of this poor design resulting in body integrity failure, based
on the other Explorers I have witnessed on our roads with the same damage and the other complaints to NHTSA and CarComplaints. But Ford is refusing to do anything to correct this failure. I notice the new Explorers no longer have this poor tailgate design. This is damage caused by Ford's poor design and should be acknowledged and repaired by Ford. I keep my vehicles in pristine condition and every time I see this unnecessary damage, caused by Ford, I'm livid!

Unfortunately, as a single mother, I do not have an extra $500 or $600 laying around to have a problem fixed that FORD should be accepting responsibility for. This is my second Explorer and if the problem would have occurred with the first, I would not have bought the second. This one will definitely be my last Explorer, and probably my last FORD. Hopefully, FORD will accept responsibility and issue a recall on the panel. This is completely unacceptable!!!!!

Seriously! What is up with this crack below my window? I have a feeling it has something to do with how hard it is to get the window to latch. Sometimes you have to slam it pretty hard for the latch to catch. Maybe they should test these plastic parts in multiple weather conditions before installing them on the vehicles. We should all unite and have them fix the plastic part for free.

OK from the exchanges here it's obvious this is a severe design flaw and no one is getting satisfaction from Ford. I had decided to fix it myself and after reading the complaints here I'm glad I did. The part can be found on the internet for under $50. Buy some primer and a can of matching paing for at most $40 and you can fix it yourself. Pry off the Ford emblem from the old one and save it. Scrape off the old one without breaking the glass. Paint the new one. Glue on the new one. Before you put the emblem back on, buy some of the foam expanding stuff you spray in cracks to seal them. Drill a hole in the panel behind where the emblem will go. Squirt in a bunch of the foam expanding crack sealer stuff. The idea here is to fill the gap between the window and the panel so it can't flex every time you press on it to close the window. Hence no future cracks. Reinstall the emblem and your done for under $100. Oh, you might like the panel in flat black instead of a matching color. That will save you a few more bucks.

I did not realize that I had a problem until today. I went to the local Ford dealer to find out what can be done and I am still waiting for a resolution. I suspect that I will have to pay for the fix myself, even though this appears to be a common problem with this vehicle. This will be the last explorer I purchase, I have had other problems with this vehicle, fortunately the former problems were covered under warranty. I have read in the other complaints that they all appear to be the same, a crack in the plastic under the rear hatch window, where the Ford logo is. Like many others, I garage my vehicle so being in the weather is not an issue.

A friend noticed the crack in the panel under the back glass of my Explorer when he parked behind me one night. I had no idea it was there and took a look. It's a nasty vertical crack and then there is a separate crack from the bottom of the plastic to the middle of the crack connecting... it looks like an upside down letter "Y" and there is no way i'm spending 400-500 dollars in fixing this thing. I look at every Explorer I see on the road now and in my tiny town of 3000 people, i'd say about 75% of the Explorers have the crack on this panel. That's pretty sad.

I have a 2004 Explorer XLT that had the popular rear lift gate crack. I sent a letter to the ford corporation about this problem. They responded from their customer support office with a very unpleasant man who would not let me talk and was very rude. I tried to explain to him my problem and asked him why ford is not taking care of their customers on this wide spread problem. I told me that he was not aware of any explorer lift gate windows that were having problems with the plastic piece cracking and how can I complain to him on something they have no knowledge as being a problem. I told him that they must have known there was a problem and change the design in the 2005 and new explorers. He told me that since I was out of my 36000 mile warranty that I was on my own. Thank god my ford dealer is great!!! They replaced it for me and it only cost me $50.00. I still had a problem paying $50.00 for a known ford problem but its better than seeing that butt crack on my car.

I bought my vehicle in May 2006. I just happened to Google 2004 Ford Explorer complaints and found that I was not the only person that has this problem. This morning when I was leaving to go to work, I noticed the crack under the rear panel. It curves along the left of the Ford logo and extends diagonally to the end of the panel. I have not researched to see if a dealer will repair it without it being at my expense. However I seriously doubt it because I am beyond the 50,000 mile warranty. If that is the case, then it can just remained cracked and hopefully it will not worsen. My only concern is that water may seep into the crack and collect inside the hatch/door. Has anyone had that happen?

This is a flaw in manufacturing and should be fixed by Ford. I have called customer service and I was told by a supervisor by the name of Randy "There is nothing more we can do for you here at Ford." Not a very customer service statement. If Ford does not do the right thing here and fix this issue, it will determine if I purchase another Ford. I have had Ford autos for many years and currently my family owns many trucks. I did not pay $30,000.00 for a vehicle to have the body start exploding. I was told by a dealership this was a known problem and they did not know why Ford did not recall the vehicles. They kept the part in stock but I was over the mileage. I am not sure what mileage has to do with a manufacturing flaw on Ford's part. This is most disturbing to me as a customer.

I have owned 3 explorers, and have passed them on to other family members.
I have always felt good knowing that they were in good working condition and
the body had been taken care of. I was looking forward to giving my 2004 explorer to my son this year for his birthday.I came home from a trip, and my wife said, what did you do to the car. I looked and there was a crack on the back panel around the
ford logo on the tailgate. I went to the local dealership and I got know where. They
said that it looked like it had been hit, or been slammed shut to hard. They quoted
$450.00 to fix it. I shopped around to other autobody places, they then told me this
wasn't the only one of these they had seen in recent months. I too started to
notice, I wasn't the only explorer out there with a (CRACK). I called
Ford, and got the same run around. They know there is a problem. I would
like to see them set up to the plate and fix the problem. I even noticed a explorer

This just happened and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet, but it already is a pain in the ass. By they way....pain in the ass (a 5 rating) sounds much worse than really awful (a 5 rating).
The crack is deep. I imagine I got it from using my rear window defrost on a cold, cold day. But that's how you get frost off the window. Frost usually happens on cold days. If this problem is due to a design flaw (which it is) Ford should fix it.
I guess I'll just trade it in for a Saturn Outlook. Better quality.

I just found this yesterday. I'd never heard of the body of a car just cracking, but clearly from this it's a common problem. I'm going to point it out to the dealer, but don't expect any help. The crack goes from the window past the logo all the way down, with a second smaller crack from the window to the first crack in a sort of y. I've had other annoying problems with my 2004 Explorer (gas gauge not resetting, sun visors had to be replaced because little plastic part holding it in breaks). My service guy at the dealership acknowledges some shoddy manufacturing. I think I've bought my last American car. That's really sad.

I have not called the dealership as I am out of warranty and have decided if I do get it fixed I will be taking it to a local bodyshop to hopefully get a better deal. I am completely fed up with Ford as this is not the first problem I have had with this vehicle which was brought brand new.I am and have vowed my next SUV purchase will be a Toyota.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer that has a cracked panel in the back. It starts at the window and goes around the ford emblem. I am not exactly sure when it happened but we had a day of cold weather and it was right about that time I noticed it. I have called the dealership and they told me it would be around $300.00 to fix it. I called Ford to see if they would fix it since this is a defect with their vehicles. They said they talk to the dealership that I bought it from and they have said they would give me a 20% discount how thoughtful of them!! I have seen other Explorers around town with the exact same crack. I called the State of Florida and they said their is nothing they can do either. Please let me know if anyone has any more information. I am going to check into this further.

I'm so upset with Ford Motor Company. I have the same problem with the crack down the middle from the window through the Ford emblem where it opens. I noticed the
crack one morning as I was leaving for work. I took it the Red McCombs Dealership in San Antonio, and was told I had to pay for it. The service department said there were two to three other complaints about this same problem. It's about a quarter of an inch crack, and about 12 to 14 inches long. I was told by a service representative over the phone, that the whole panel was made out of plastic.
Something needs to be done about this. I'll never buy another Ford automobile again.
This is a defect and Ford should replace it, at no charge to the customer.

The rear panel under the rear glass just cracked in the middle for no reason. I asked the dealership if this was uncommon and his reply was no, that he'd seen this many times for no reason. If Ford knows that they have a deficiency in their product then they should cover that item.

I am absolutely pissed off at Ford Mo. for the way they are handling this issue. Obviously this issue is not small as it ranges from 2000 to 2004 at least! The dealer doesn't want to deal with me and the corp. office keeps saying they will do what they can after I pay for a review of the vehicle BUT they know they will not be able to cover all the expenses. I have been Ford through and through since my first vehicle, but not it is time to go Toyota or GMC all the way. I use to tell everyone how I wouldn't own anything other than a F150, Mustang, or Explorer but the customer service of Ford has ruined my love for their vehicles.
This is about a 1/8th inch crack from right under the hatchback glass that goes around the Ford emblem and then continues down to the hatchback handle. A huge eye sore and even bigger loss on my part when I trade it in for a GMC!

As all the others, just noticed a crack on the rear lift window on my Explorer. Have not had any problems until now. Went to the service dept and was told this has happened to others but since it is not a "safety issue", Ford has not issued a recall. This is clearly a design defect, and I should not and will not agree to pay to have it replaced. If Ford won't replace it, then this will be the last Ford product I ever buy.

I was closing the upper half of tailgate (window portion) and did not slam or press hard on back and the plastic panel which runs the length under rear window and just to right of Ford Emblem cracked all the way thru and full length from window to latch. I am concerned that this problem seems prevalent for so many years (2002 had 271 complaints in this website alone)...god only knows how many were repaired and not reported. Ford needs to step up and help owners this is obviously a weak point in their manufacturing process.

Ford needs to own up for their defective parts. How is it that I am being put out of 400-500 dollars, when I can see now that it is pretty common. The SUV is 3 years old, there is absolutely no reason as to why this panel should be split down the middle. It is ironic that it split right down the middle of the ford symbol. I just want to be treated fairly.

I just returned from my Ford Dealership and one person told me he has seen some of these cracks. When the service manager came by he (probably thinking I was just a woman) told me it was my problem, I was to repair it and the only other ones he has seen were due to baseballs or some other trauma to the vehicle. My crack started small and then spread all the way around the Ford emblem in the back. I WILL NOT pay for this! This is definitely a problem Ford has to deal with or they should lose lots of customers. Lets all keep hounding Ford and get them to do something and be accountable for their product. IF not I will buy foreign next.

My wife came home from work this last Monday, and told me that there was a crack in the back hatch. When she told me this, I immediately thought about our annoying neighbors. So, I went to look at the damage, and I notice that it was in the actual plastic molding below the window, past the Ford emblem to the bottom of the panel. The next thing I thought to look for was any physical strike, there was none. So I decided to do some looking online and I discovered that I am not the first one to have this happen. So if any one has any suggestions, or solutions please let me know.

FOLLOW UP *** I just called FORD, they said that customers have to initiate complaint into FORD @ 1-800-392-3673 -- then, take it to a dealership (FORD) to make complaint & quote in the computer, then-- call FORD back and they will start the process. Now what they said it they are aware of the issue, that more people need to call directly into FORD, then go to the dealer and get an estimate, then follow through back to FORD. They said when they recieve enough official complaints through FORD, they will initate a actual RECALL.

And we wonder why Americans are alienating the Big Three and choosing imports. Here we have an American staple Ford Motor Company and one of their top of the line products, Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer, with a crack on the body panel, extending from the back window, through the Ford logo, and extending to the end of the lift gate. This is an embarassment to Ford and to me as a driver of the vehicle. Also, why should I, the faithful consumer of your products, fork out additional money to correct defects in Ford products? They should be more than willing to offer compensation for such repairs.
I checked with the local Ford bodyshop, "not covered since warranty is out", checked with my insurance company..."not covered since this is a factory defect".
Rest assured..... this is the last Ford that I plan to own. I used to show offense when someone would state what the acronym F. O. R. D. meant(fix or repair daily), but seemingly I have been on the wrong team.
Time to check out the imports since Ford is not willing to stand behind their products and product defects.

we got our explorer back from having the transmission replaced when we saw the crack in the panel. we took it back to be fixed and three days later get the call saying they wont fix it but that it happens in 2 out of 5 explorers and to call the 1800 number to report it and they will fix it. well they tell us that they have no reports of the problem and will not fix it and to take it up with the dealer. so we call the dealer back and tell them this and they tell us to call back the 1800 number. we dont have time for this run around we have to work so we can actually pay to fix the problem if that is what it comes down to. so now we have owned the explorer for almost five months, put 3000 miles on it because we went on vacation and we have had to spend an extra 2500 dollars on it and who knows how much more to get the panel fixed. for being such a new car with low miles it sure has had a lot of issues for us already. WE WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN.

It wasn't there yesterday, but saw it today when I came out from shopping. Thought it might be just a fluke, but realized when I came to this site I'm not the only one who has experienced this same annoyance. Sure, it's not a major thing, but it sure isn't something I was expecting to see. Of course my car's warranty just ended in March of 2007, so unless there's a recall I guess I'll be paying for the repair out of my pocket if I decide to have it fixed. What a pain!

I was 322 miles over the warranty and I had just had the car into the dealer at 35550 for service so in less than 1000 miles and the weather is sunny and 72-75 degrees the back hatch has completely separated and the dealership says "sorry it is past warranty". ONE MORNING A FEW MONTHS AGO, AS I WAS LEAVING TO GO TO WORK, I OPENED MY GARAGE DOOR AND NOTICED I HAD A CRACK BELOW MY BACK GLASS ON THE TAILGATE, I DID NOT KNOW WHY, I HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING AND IT WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE ALL NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING AS I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK AGAIN, THE BOTTOM HAD CRACKED OVER NIGHT. IT IS A STRAIGHT LINE UNDER MY WINDOW ABOVE AND BELOW THE FORD EMBLEM ON THE BACK. THIS PAST WEEKEND MY HUSBAND AND I WENT TO THE BEACH FOR THE WEEKEND AND WE WENT THROUGH A CAR WASH AND THE GUY THAT WAS DRYING OUR CAR OFF SAID SOMETHING ABOUT IT, HE SAID HE SEES THEM ALL OF THE TIME. ITS PRETTY SAD WHEN YOU PAY $30,000.00+ FOR A VEHICLE AND SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS AND FORD KNOWS IT AND OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER FORD IN THE FUTURE, THIS WILL BE THE LAST. I HAVE HAD ALOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS HAPPEN SINCE I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE. RIGHT AFTER I GOT IT ONE OF THE WINDOW MOTORS WENT OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED, THE MOTOR WAS BAD. I HAVE TROUBLE NOW WITH ONE OF THE OTHER WINDOWS SOMETIMES IT WANTS TO WORK AND SOMETIMES NOT. It is due to the type of glue they used. Apparently they'll pay for it if it's under warranty but I'm just over my 36,000 miles so I have to pay for it. The dealership indicated it is a Ford defect but won't pay for it until it's a recall.... what kind of crap is that? This is a $40K vehicle!!! I bought this SUV and a month later the back door cracked below the window. I contacted Ford and they told be that they could not do a thing until the NHTSA orders them to! Yeah right! They can order a recall on there own per the NHTSA web page. I called NHTSA and filled a complaint and I would suggest that everyone does that as well so we can get our Explorers fix! Their number is 1-888-327-4236 or you can report it to the NHTSA at http://www.safercar.gov. That will be the best way to get this done I think. If anyone has any other ideas on how to have Ford step up let me know. They said that it was not a safety issue at Ford.. It will be if the glass falls out on one of my children or when I am driving.

Discovered the back frame area around the back tailgate glass was cracked just below the window wiper. It was not cracked in one crack but several all the way down from the bottom of the glass to the bottom of the frame that holds the back glass. It appeared as a stress crack not like a fracture or crack caused by a collision. There was no other damage. Took it to the dealership and they said they had some others that had been coming in with this problem. I left it to be fixed. They called later to inform me that I was going to have to pay for it to be fixed. I had it fixed and payed however I have since seen other vehicles on the road the same model but maybe not same year model with the same problem. I think there is a recall issue here and ford should be paying to fix this. Someone should look into this.

My 2004 Explorer (bought when the 2005 became available) has developed THE crack in the rear panel underneath the rear window that afflicts so many other Explorers. Ever since it happened I have noticed many other Explorers with the same crack. Called my dealer and he said it wasn't covered under the extended warranty I had purchased from Ford. I called the 800.392.3673 and they took all the information but ultimately told me that I needed to TAKE it to a dealer so that they can take a look at the crack. I guess that I'll have to play the game, hopefully Ford will do something about it (although I will not put any money on it). This is clearly a design flaw not a one time occurrence.

I recently noticed a crack in the rear panel underneath the rear window. I called the dealer to ask if there had been a recall and they said only on the latch. I asked if they thought it was strange that the panel cracked and I too was told it was from the cold weather. What the heck kind of answer is that? Since when does cold weather make the exterior of a car crack? This seems to be a BIG problem and Ford needs to do something about this. I have driven Fords my whole life (my Dad worked for Ford) and their quality has gone way down hill. I have had more problems with this car than all my other cars put together!

My 2004 Explorer (bought in Nov. 2004) has the same problem with the lovely crack in the panel below the liftgate window. The crack starts right below the window then curves very nicely around the left side of the FORD logo before traveling straight down again for another 3-4 inches. What's with that! I have driven Fords for most of my 40 years of driving.
My first car was a 1963 Ford Fairlane, a sweet little car. I've had two Pintos, a Maverick, an F100 truck, and two Explorers. I have NEVER had a problem like this with any of my Fords vehicles! My previous Explorer was a 1995 that gave me 130K miles of trouble-free driving. The day that I traded it in on the 2004 Explorer, the 95's exterior still looked as good as it did the day I drove it off the dealer's lot. My 2004 has less than 30,000 miles and there's that damn crack! I had almost caved in and bought a Toyota, instead of the Explorer, but thought, OH NO, I'LL BE LOYAL TO THE US AUTOMAKERS. So much for loyalty. If they can't provide the same quality, the hell with them. My next vehicle will be foreign made. The crack hasn't been repaired yet, but I am still under warranty and the dealer has ordered the replacement parts. I'm scheduled to take it in next week, and was told that they will need to keep the vehicle for 3 days because they will need to paint. We'll see how it all shakes out! Whew! That was long.... sorry! :-D But I am still peeved that I have be inconvenienced like this!!!!!!!

I can see lots of people have this problem too! Went to a movie, came out - and a large crack runs from the window to the bottom of the frame, right next to the emblem. I already have the car in today for fuel gauge issues, mentioned the crack, and service guy went "oh yeah, we've heard about that - I'll add it to your warranty work". Thank G-D - I have a good Ford dealership that really does believe in covering warranty issues. (Or so I hope - if I have a $400 bill when I pick the car up, I'll be pissed)

I can't believe I found this many people with the exact same problem! I got home from the grocery store yesterday to unload and there it was staring at me. A giant crack in the hatch from just under the rear window all the way down to where the hatch opens. The guy at the dealership told me that "anything can happen to a vehicle with that many miles on it." I say BS!!! You don't see other vehicles, regardless of the mileage, driving down the road and have a spontaneous crack in the body work!!! The crack wasn't there when I was loading my groceries, and it's only a 10 - 15 minute drive home from the store. Ford needs to pay for this. And my next SUV will be a Toyota. No more Fords at my house.
